i'm the local who tries to look like a tourist so i don't have to speak with tourists asking for directions or people asking for smokes. quite literally saying "i don't speak portuguese" and when they try speaking english "i don't speak english either mate, sorry about that"

I get asked for directions everywhere I go. I must be doing a good job. People asking for smokes is a thing of the past here. Maybe if you happen across people coming home from the pub late at night, but it's so rare here now. I don't miss it. I do miss smokes though

You've got the right idea. It'd be funny if you got recognised by someone later on when you're ranting away in Portuguese.

already happened something like that a few years back. was on my way to a motörhead concert with a friend chatting in portuguese and a girl tried to sell us cheaper tickets. we replied "we don't speak portuguese" and continued chatting away in portuguese
