I remember when the playstation first came out, and I remember this game. I hadn't played a lot of 3D games to this time, and the Playstation felt so next generation. I thought Crash Bandicoot looked cool (nice graphics, animation and style), but the game itself didn't really appeal, so I didn't play it much. I also didn't know much about 3D graphics and animation, so I took it all for granted. I did wonder how it could look so good compared to a lot of other 3D games released at the time.
This video was fascinating. I almost didn't watch it because I don't care about Crash Bandicoot at all. It showed how this game basically revolutionised 3D gaming on consoles. It goes over (in not enough detail for ubernerds) how they squeezed every kilobyte of memory they could, by stealing it away from unnecessary system processes, how they actively used the CD ROM, and how they compressed animations. Basically it was a game made by a few ubergeek perfectionists that took on and achieved more than much bigger companies were doing at the time, even when compared to PC games.
It's simply a marvel what they did with 2mb system ram and 1mb video ram.
