For a dude that never plays video games I love video games! This time I got hooked by Myst. I remember this game vividly. I remember the 3D environments looking absolutely stunning, and the puzzles being so obscure and hard, and the soundtrack being rich and atmospheric (on point AF, as the kids say). I played at school when I was 11. It was already a few years old by then and probably wasn't so impressive to people that had access to the best consumer computers, but I'd had almost no exposure to computers by 1995 (even though I thought they were the best things ever).
There was nothing else like it, and even with everything being prerendered (like the most basic cheat to create high detail environments with almost no runtime processing), it pushed CD technology to its limits. Now all this, and much more can be rendered in real time.
As we speak I'm, downloading realMyst: Masterpiece Edition off GOG. I've been meaning to buy realMyst for years, but now there's an even cooler version that's been out only since 2014! https://www.gog.com/game/real_myst_masterpiece_edition . Maybe one day I'll even play the sequal, Riven.

I was just about to post a screenshot but then I realised it was spoiler af. I'll get something pretty.
It's hard to compare it to the original version from memory. All this is in actual 3D, with lots of those modern things we take for granted. Like they could make it even better now. I suppose the original would feel clunky by comparison, with everything being navigated by clicking.

Other than being very low resolution the original is probably your thing.

Masterpiece edition is basically the same. Like, it feels like how I remember the original, only full 3D instead of prerendered.

I just got to a new "age". There are all these other worlds, and they are referred to as ages. I think 11 y/o me must have been retarded.

I'd love to make a game like this. Just modelling pretty environments and scheming up puzzles.

you could base it on those dungeon exploring books like fighting fantasy. those are pretty cool

I don't know them. I've actually got an idea for a psychological horror short that I think would benefit from interesting set design and infuriating puzzles. I think. I dunno. It's more like some flashes of imagery and some pretty nebulous ideas, concepts and feelings.
