Also, I'm trying out new cookie configuration on a test server to see if I can sort this session authentication thing out. At the moment after a session times out (one hour of inactivity) then the user has to log back in, regardless of if they have "remember me" checked or not. That's not how it's meant to be but that seems to be the experience for a lot of users since day one.

There's something wrong in the cookies that is failing the authenticated user flag.

i have mine personalized, maybe it's that

and a couple cleaners and antivirus with different settings for different targets. you'd be surprised how much junk is left behind when you use your work laptop as a regular everyday use laptop aswell

what do you have personalised? Whenever I update the cookies I've been removing the old ones. This is the only configuration that has kept me logged in beyond the hard set 60 minutes session timeout.
