This is very cool
My husband 3D printed me an electric viola isn't it beautiful?
The only problem is I was a very mediocre violin player and I am an even worse viola player, so maybe I'll upload a demo when I've practiced enough to not make people's ears bleed, if that ever happens.

That's freaking awesome. I'd love to hear it. I always wanted to learn violin or viola. But I want to learn almost all the instruments.

I much prefer the viola to the violin because the deeper notes sound great especially plugged into an amp with overdrive on
Don't know why I didn't start learning it earlier, probably because I couldn't justify the cost of a normal one, let alone an electric, knowing my track record with learning instruments! Thing is with strings is when you're starting out they can sound absolutely dreadful, which is pretty discouraging.
This is what the design sounds like as a violin by someone who can actually play:

Awesome And agree, I'd hide in a soundproof box while learning to hide my shame.

I'm considering surveying my neighbours on their favourite songs so I can avoid ruining them for them with my atrocious renditions

That's so British of you! Does any of the sound come from the printed material, or is it mostly the electronic components.

Re: This is very cool
The strings still make a noise but it doesn't resonate like a normal viola/violin so it's a lot quieter, which is good for practicing! The design has an electronic pick-up just below the bridge that processes the vibrations transferred from the strings, I reckon the main way the printed material effects the sound is how well it keeps the tension of the strings consistant, it's got a steel rod going through it so it's pretty good.

Interesting. I'd love to get a 3D printer Maybe if I can focus on getting my work done, instead of doing who even knows what, I could afford one

So rad! Can't wait to hear you play, eventually.

This is the most embarrassing piece of work since Clint Eastwood painted his wagon.
